​​​What are City Hall hours of operation?

City Hall is open Monday-Friday from 09:00 AM - 3:00 PM. You are welcome to stop by at any time to speak to us about an issue or concern. You may also phone us at (859) 498-8725. 

City Hall is closed on the following holidays:

- The first day of January (New Year's Day)

- The third Monday in January (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)

- The third Monday in February (Presidents' Day)​

- The last Monday in May (Memorial Day)

- ​The nineteenth day of June (​Juneteenth Independence Day)

- The fourth day of July (Independence Day)

- The first Monday in September (Labor Day)

- The second Monday in October (Columbus Day)

- The eleventh day of November (Veterans Day)

- The fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving Day)

- The fourth Friday in November (General Office/Street Department)

- The twenty-fifth day of December (Christmas Day)

* Government services are limited during the annual Court Day festival (annually in October). However, a mobile City Hall is located in one of our downtown parking lots in order to provide services during the festival. 


How do I contact the Mayor about an issue or concern?

Mayor Botts wants to hear from you and always welcomes a visit from the public at City Hall. However, his schedule fills up quickly. Please phone City Hall at (859) 498-8725 if you wish to make an appointment or to speak to him personally. You can also e-mail him at al.botts@ky.gov. Mayor Botts will see anyone who walks into City Hall and requests a meeting, but to respect your valuable time, we encourage you to make an appointment before you drop by to make sure he is available to hear your issue or concern.  


How do I contact one of the City Council members about an issue or concern?

Visit the GOVERNMENT tab and go to CITY COUNCIL members to see contact info for your elected officials. 


Would you like to apply for an occupational or business license? 

Anyone wishing to engage in a business, occupation, or profession in the city must obtain a license. Visit City Hall during business hours to see the City Clerk to apply. Phone (859) 498-8725 if you have any specific questions or concerns. City Hall will automatically send out renewal notices annually.  


How do I pay my property taxes?

Visit our main page to get all of the information you need to check your property taxes online!  Here you may print off your tax bill, download a receipt, or check the status of your tax bill. 

Anyone that owns property in the city will be mailed a notice each fall. The owner or mortgage company may remit payment to the City Clerk during normal business hours or by mail to

Who do I call if I need the police?

For any emergency, please dial 911. If it is not an emergency, phone (859) 498-8899 or (859)498-8720.


How do I report a street light outage, a pothole, or an issue with a street sign?

Contact our Public Works office at (859) 498-8744 to speak to our Public Works Director, or use the online submission form under the CONTACT US tab to report the issue.  


What do I do if I receive a notice of a code violation? How do I report a code issue or concern that I have witnessed?

Notices are delivered by City Hall to any property owner that is in violation of a code or ordinance. If action is taken to remedy the issue the case may be closed. Failure to take action on a notice will result in your case being referred to the Code Enforcement Board for review and/or liens will be placed on the property. Common violations include failure to mow the lawn; having trash or debris on the property; parking vehicles on sidewalks or in the front or side yards; and failure to maintain the home to a habitable state. Is Mt Sterling a wet, dry, or moist city?

We are a "WET" city. Alcohol sales are permitted by those establishments that have obtained the proper licenses through the state. Sales in the city are permitted from 07:00AM-MIDNIGHT (Monday-Saturday) and 1:00PM-MIDNIGHT (Sunday).   


How do I apply for a building or sign permit?

The city Building Inspector is available to assist you Monday-Thursday from 08:00AM - 02:30PM, on Friday by appointment only. That office is located on the second floor of City Hall. The phone numbers are (859) 498-8725 or (606) 210-3244. 


I'd like to attend a public meeting. When are they held? 

The Board of Adjustments (variances to code) meets on the SECOND MONDAY OF THE MONTH at City Hall. The meeting starts at 2:00PM. If you wish to bring an issue before the board please phone City Hall and request to be placed on the agenda as soon as possible. Many issues before this board require extensive research and coordination.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the SECOND MONDAY OF THE MONTH at City Hall. The meeting starts at 6:30PM. If you wish to bring an issue before the commission please phone City Hall and request to be placed on the agenda as soon as possible. Many issues before this commission require extensive research and coordination.

​The Code Enforcement Board meets on the SECOND THURSDAY OF THE MONTH at City Hall. The meeting starts at 4:00PM. If you wish to bring an issue before the board or respond to a notice please phone City Hall and request to be placed on the agenda as soon as possible. Many issues before this board require extensive research and coordination.

The City Council meets on the THIRD TUESDAY OF THE MONTH at City Hall. The meeting starts at 7:00PM. If you wish to bring an issue before the council please phone City Hall and request to be placed on the agenda no later than noon on the Friday before the meeting. 

There are several other public meetings or boards and commissions that are held in the community. The Mt. Sterling Advocate has a complete list of those meetings that is published weekly. Additionally, our local radio station, WMST (1150 AM and 106.9 FM) will also notify the public of those meeting places and times. 


Are there places to park downtown when I need to visit City Hall?

Yes! There are two parking spaces in front of City Hall that are reserved for those that need to conduct business in the building. The city also maintains four lots where parking is free. Please note that parking is permitted on downtown city streets in designated spaces for two hour periods. The two-hour parking spaces are strictly enforced Monday - Friday from 08:00AM to 5:00PM. 


I live in the county, can I conduct county business at City Hall?

No. All county business conducted at the County Courthouse or at the County Annex. When in doubt, give us a call and we will help direct you to the correct location.  


How do I obtain an Open Records Request?

The Kentucky Open Records Act requires that anyone wishing to view or obtain copies of agency records must submit a request in writing to the records custodian of the agency from which they desire records. The request must identify the records sought, as well as contain your name, address, email and phone number in the event you should need to be contacted. You may submit these inquiries or requests to the City Clerk. Contact us at (859) 498-8725 for further information. 

Does the city have an animal control officer?

No. The county employees an Animal Control officer who responds to complaints of stray or lost animals. You may contact Montgomery County Dispatch at (859) 498-8720.
